The Library of the institute can claim to have outstanding collection of books, reports and journals in social sciences in whole of eastern region of the country.

During 2009-2010 financial year library had added 700 books, and 296 reports. At present Library holds more than 58,000 bound journals & periodicals. Besides there are 92 micro films in the stock. The British Council presented 2000 books under ODA's Books Presentation Programme. The ICSSR has gifted 195 volumes to library. Late Sri CSP Sinha donated 3400 volumes of books, reports, journals. The USIS, Calcutta presented 88 volumes of books and journals. Dr. Ranjan Prasad Yadav, M.P. donated 2887 reports and publications. Besides, various government agencies, public sector undertakings, State Assembly, Parliament, different commissions, committees and international bodies like the United Nations, UNESCO, ILO regularly send their reports and publications. The library also maintains Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan Collection. The Institute presently subscribes to 219 journals and periodicals. The Library also receives 26 journals on exchange. The back issues of some important journals are also available. Library also subscribes to some important weeklies and newspapers.

The library provides for documentation service and a quarterly classified documentation list is prepared from the journals. A new item "Bihar in Print", a quarterly bulletin has been added to the documentation list. The bibliography service covers the following issues: Social and Cultural Change in India, Family Researches in Asia, Tribal Life in North-Eastern Region of India, Social Economic Study of Bihar, Input-Output Economics, Land Holdings of India, Women in India, Non-alignment, Naxalite Movement in India, Migration, Non-economic Factors in Rural Development, Bihar in Ferment, Police and Policing in India, Muslims in Bihar, Scheduled Castes: Their status and education, Communalism in India.

The Institutes' library has been designated as one of the Depository Libraries in India by international organisations like the UNCTAD and the UNESCO.

The library has also received more than 3400 valuable books from Mr. C.S.P. Sinha covering a wide range of subjects including social sciences, humanities and comparative religious. Recently Professor Ramesh Pd. Sinha donated more than two hundred valuable books relating to social sciences to the library.
